Closure of JustTextGiving in March 2019
We welcome any charities to DONATE who are looking for a charity text service and who were previously using JustTextGiving. The FAQs below should answer all your questions but if not, please get in touch.

Do you offer text giving across all mobile networks
Our service is compatible across all the UK networks (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three. Sky and Virgin and others). Only UK mobile SIM phones can participate (this excludes Eire and the Channel Islands). Please note though that those with an overseas SIM cannot use UK premium text services. Our mobile web channel (PayPal, credit and debit cards) provides a giving route for these supporters.
Some mobile contracts preclude premium text billing and those users will not be able to participate. This is outside our control and could be for a number of reasons:
- A user may have reached their spend limit, there is a £240 per month limit which is a legal requirement.
- Their account may have been blocked (from third parties or premium charge numbers) by their Mobile Network Operator.
- Android phones automatically block third-party messages, this can be changed in the settings on the mobile phone.
- Their mobile network provider has not enabled mobile billing for this particular service.
To confirm if any of the above apply to a user account they should speak to their mobile network provider.
We have tried a test donation but have not received a response. Is the system working?
Firstly, please ensure your campaign has been ‘enabled’ (My Campaigns > Edit> Campaign Activation> [select]).
Unfortunately, mobile phone operators can block premium text messaging (the service used for text donations). We recommend you ask colleagues and friends to also test your campaign.
Please also contact your mobile operator and ensure your contract permits premium text messaging.
In rare circumstances the text service may not be working but in that case it will not be working for all our client charitable organisations and we will be aware of an issue and be resolving it.
Can any organisation use DONATE™'s text giving service?
DONATE™ text giving service is available to any charitable organisation that is registered with DONATE™. If you are not yet registered with DONATE™ you can do so for free here.
How long does it take to set-up text giving?
Once an organisation is set up with DONATE™ you can create a text campaign from your portal.
Your text giving campaign should be available within two hours. You can see how to set-up text giving here.
Can we choose our own keyword entry word and change it as required?
Yes. For each campaign you may select an available, memorable keyword (up to 8 characters) for entry i.e. BUTTERCUP.
Please note that keywords are leased from us (to ensure they can be recycled) and generic keywords may have a leasing charge applied.
How much can a donor give?
We provide £1, £3, £5 and £10, £20 and £30 text giving channels. Premium text services are regulated at £30 per 24 hours. There are no monthly or other ongoing charges for use of these channels.
Does the keyword need to specify the amount being donated?
We provide a range of open donation channels which are available to each keyword. You decide which channel(s) to promote in marketing literature. This approach avoids typing errors and increases the amounts given. For example
- Text WORKSHOP to 70201 to give £1
- Text WORKSHOP to 70331 to give £3
- Text WORKSHOP to 70970 to give £5
- Text WORKSHOP to 70191 to give £10
Can regular monthly donations be set-up by text
Yes. Once a donor has made a donation, their reply text include a PIN to initiate a monthly donation for that amount.
Can we track and manage our campaigns?
Yes, once signed up you have access to your self-serve portal. This gives you 24/7 access to donation reports and GDPR compliant donor opted-in data. The portal also enable you to add/enable/disable campaigns, download signage templates, amend thank-you emails and texts and much much more. Is Gift Aid available with text giving?
Yes. Once a donor has donated via text, they will receive an option to add Gift Aid to their donation.
What are DONATE's charges for the text donation service?
DONATE™ does not charge for running the text donation service but we charge our normal transaction fees for each text donation made (4.5% for charities, 5% for non-charities). More information about our fees is available here.
Do we have access to the donor's mobile numbers for future marketing purposes?
DONATE™ is fully GDPR compliant. By default a mobile donor is not giving permission for their mobile numbers being made available for marketing purposes. However, if, during the Gift Aid process, a donor gives their marketing permission then you will have access to the number for marketing purposes.
When a supporter donates via text giving, will there be any additional charges?
Donors maybe charged their standard network rate on top of the donation amount. This should be mentioned on any accompanying literature.
Can we create a ‘Thank you’ text to supporters once they have made a donation?
Yes. You can personalise your ‘Thank you’ text from your portal. This will be approved by DONATE™ before going live.
What management reporting tools are available?
All organisational users of DONATE™ have access to our self-serve, management portal where administrators can access donation reports, download web, text, QR donation codes, user data and much much more.
When do we receive funds from DONATE™?
Funds are received by National Funding Scheme (registered charity) and passed across (less fees) as per our Affiliation Agreements.
How should we promote the text giving to our supporters?
You can promote your text giving campaign across social media, email and other channels. Don’t forget to also ask your trustees and other supporters to promote the text-giving keywords.
Please note that your promotional material must include the following:
- That payment will be taken by National Funding Scheme, t/a DONATE.
- That charges will be made to the supporter’s mobile phone bill.
- That persons under the age of 16 are not permitted to participate.
- That National Funding Scheme charge 4.5%* of the donation.
